Session Description:

This session will provide a brief overview of the clinical benefits of blenderized tube feeding (BTF) and the impact on clinical outcomes in both pediatric and adult enteral nutrition patients. Methods of administration with emphasis on indications for using an enteral feeding pump will be covered including aspects of gastric and jejunal administration. Use of the IDDSI (International Dysphagia Diet Standarisation Initiative) Framework to define viscosity of BTF formulas will be addressed concluding with a discussion of BTF-related innovations and future directions.

Learning Objectives: 

At the conclusion of the symposium, participants will be able to:

  • Describe outcomes of BTF in medically complex children and adults with head and neck cancer
  • Review BTF administration including gastric and jejunal routes and primary methods of administration (discuss standard vs. new generation enteral feeding pumps)
  • Discuss the value of using the IDDSI Framework & Testing Methods to determine BTF viscosity.
